What's new

The latest version is 2.8.0. The editor tells you when an update is ready, or download it here.

2.8 Bending surfaces, flowing particles and shape grids

  • Mesh tracking that bends. The mesh now bends and folds with moving surfaces like flags, cloth and faces, and stays steady when something passes in front. A Stiffness setting decides how freely it bends.
  • Swirling particle flow. Curl flow carries particles along a smooth swirl, for smoke, ink in water and flowing dust.
  • Fine dust. Draw hundreds of thousands of small particles for dense smoke, sand and star fields.
  • Ribbons along a path. Particles flowing along a drawn path can be held close to it, so they form a tight ribbon with a spray around it.
  • New particle presets. Flowing ribbon, Ink ribbon, Smoke ring, Dust stream, Gold bloom and Rain dripping from a layer.
  • Shape grid. Rows and columns of circles, squares, diamonds, crosses and more, rippling with a wave that grows, turns, fades and highlights them. It loops by itself.
  • Dashed lines. Dashes, dots and dash-dot strokes on shapes and paths, with dashes that march along the line.
  • Text on a path. Draw a path on a text layer and the letters follow it, and can keep flowing along it.
  • Faster. Quicker exports, tracking, roto brush and particles.

2.7 Speed, clipping masks and gradient shapes

  • Faster everywhere. Exports read video straight from your files with the graphics card, and tracking, the roto brush and particles run several times faster.
  • Bigger meshes. Mesh tracking grids of up to 24 by 24 points.
  • Clipping masks. With Show inside, the shape or text can now stay visible with the other layer showing on top of it, inside its shape.
  • Gradient shapes. Rectangles, ellipses and pen paths can be filled with linear or radial gradients.
  • More particle shapes. Triangle, diamond, hexagon and heart.

2.6.1 Previews and news tickers

  • Text is never cut off. Long lines and wide paragraph boxes show in full, even past the frame.
  • Hover previews. Titles, text animations and templates play when you move the mouse over them.
  • News scroll. Text that scrolls right to left, left to right, up like credits or down, and a ready-made News ticker title.
  • Animated shape size. Keyframe the width, height, corners and stroke of rectangles and ellipses.
  • Several keyframes at once. Drag a box around keyframes, or Shift + click them, then move or delete them together.
  • Bins. Right-click the empty part of the Media tab to make a bin, and drag files onto it.

2.6 Tracking, templates and text

  • Planar tracking. Track a screen, sign or wall as a whole surface. It ignores things passing in front and does not drift, and the corners may even be hidden.
  • Mesh tracking. A grid that follows surfaces which are not flat, and warps your layer onto them.
  • Templates library. Templates are kept in their own library, so every project can use them. Save the selected layers or a whole composition.
  • Paragraph text. Text that wraps inside a box. Drag the sides of the box in the viewer to change its width.
  • Gradient color mattes. Solid, linear in any direction, or radial.
  • Viewer zoom and pan. Scroll to zoom and drag with the middle mouse button to see paths and masks outside the frame.
  • Move a whole mask. Alt + click a mask to move, resize and rotate it at once.
  • Delete media from the keyboard. Select files in the Media tab and press Delete or Backspace.

2.5 Roto brush and 3D keyer

  • Roto brush. Paint a few strokes over a person or object and the cut-out follows it from frame to frame.
  • 3D keyer. Draw over the green or blue screen to key every shade of it, and draw over anything of the subject that went missing to keep it.
  • Start-up screen. A small window shows what is loading while the editor starts.
